Innovation plays a crucial role in recycling. That is why at Ecoembes we are working to ensure its presence in the entire process, from the time a container is manufactured until it becomes a new product or raw material, including the technology used to pick it up and recycle it.
One of Ecoembes’s main commitments in this area is to eco-design, that is, the creation of more sustainable packaging. Ecoembes encourages companies to adopt measure during the packaging manufacturing process to reduce its weight, facilitate its reutilization, improve its recyclability and incorporate recycled raw materials. In short, we are working so that packaging will have a smaller environmental footprint.
Since 1999 we have promoted over 48,819 eco-design measures that have resulted in more than 528,691 tons of raw materials being saved. Thanks to this, the weight of packaging has gone down by 17.9%, so that now, for example, a yogurt container weighs only half as much, a can of beer is 17% lighter and a bottle of water is made from recycled, renewable plastic.
We are also relying on technology to help us optimize the efficiency of the packaging pick-up and sorting process (such as container level detectors, the use of GPS to plan pick-up routes, and automated sorting plants where the packaging deposited yellow containers ends up). In addition we are cooperating with various institutions on research projects to improve the recyclability of packaging and the uses to which recycled materials can be put.
