Frequently asked questions

The more packaging is placed on the market, the more Ecoembes earns?
No, that is not true. Ecoembes, being a non-profit organisation, does not earn money, but rather receives it from companies and then uses it to cover the costs of selective packaging collection in local councils throughout Spain, in order to comply with its legal obligation. In other words, it is the expenses that define the income (not profits) and not the other way around.
Under this fundamental premise, the more packaging there is on the market and the more is deposited in the appropriate containers once it becomes waste, the more resources will have to be allocated to ensure its proper recycling. Therefore, an increase in the amount of packaging recycled implies a higher cost of maintaining the selective collection system, which will have to be financed by companies.
